University of Oregon freshman Ryan Hunter-Simms, a San Gorgonio High School product, matched his personal best in the shot put with a throw of 53-5 3/4 (16.30m) to finish second at an April meet dual pitting No. 2 Arkansas against fourth-ranked Oregon.

Hunter-Simms’ Oregon squad lost when the 4 x 400 went to the Razorbacks’ relay, 86-77. A Ducks’ win would’ve left Oregon with an 82-81 triumph.

The season’s highlight may well have been Oregon’s home meet win over No. 1-ranked Texas A&M at the Pepsi Invitational on April 6 – 194 1/2 - 180 1/2.

Hunter-Simms was second (50-8 1/4) to Washington State’s Matt Wardell (51-10) in the shot put, outdueling Texas A&M’s Dalton Rowan (46-11 3/4).

Rowan won the discus with Hunter-Simms (162-feet) coming up 26 1/2-feet short in fifth place.

Hunter-Simms, a two-way football player at San G, was the area’s 2012 Ken Hubbs Award winner. He chose collegiate track & field over football and accepted an athletic scholarship to Oregon.

The San G product aligned himself with one of America’s top track & field programs.

In June, Mac Fleet flew to victory in the men’s 1,500 meters as the Oregon men’s and women’s track team took home a pair of trophies at the NCAA Track and Field Championships.

The women finished third with 43 points for their unprecedented fifth straight top three finish, while the men earned a trophy for the first time in four years, taking fourth with 44 points.

“It was a big push by the men today,” said Oregon head coach Robert Johnson. “It was a big finish and for them to do that was huge.

“(The women) tried their hardest today and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Florida and Texas A&M tied for the men’s title with 53 points. Arkansas was third with 46.5, followed by the Ducks.

Kansas won its first ever NCAA women’s title with 60 points, followed by Texas A&M with 44 and Oregon.

Oregon hosted the NCAA, placed just one athlete in the weight event athlete (hammer thrower Greg Skipper) in the championships.

Texas sophomore Ryan Crouser, the top seed in the shot put, won the event by 1 1/2-inches (66-7 3/4, 20.31 meters) over Arizona State’s Jordan Clark. Hunter-Simms’ 16.3 meters was short of the NCAA qualifying mark. Oregon failed to land any qualifiers at the NCAA West Region at the University of Texas, held in May.
