Spartans Pull Reversal on Cowboys... Wrestling Wins 39-28

Game Date
Dec 14, 2011
Score
SPARTANS: 39
CAJON HIGH SCHOOL: 28

For only the second time in who knows how many attempts... 19 at best count, the Spartans battled the perennial wrestling powerhouse Cajon Cowboys and came away victorious 39-28 setting up what could be an incredible run to a San Andreas League title for first year Head Coach Lun Son.  The win was even sweeter given the fact that Coach Son began his wrestling career at Cajon as a wrestler and assistant coach.  Coach Son is also joined on the Spartan bench by Assistant Coach Dean Hernandez who coached Son at Cajon.

Not atypical of past years, the Spartans jumped out to an early lead with strength in the lower weights.  Scorpio Duarte,106, opened with a pin in the second period followed by Donal Martinez's, 113, third period pin to give San G a 12-0 lead.  First year varsity and sophomore, Michael Simental, 120, put the Cowboys on notice with a tough 6-3 decision and a 15-0 team margin.  The Cowboys won decisions at 126 and 132 to close the gap to 15-7, but senior Andrew Simental, 138, regained the Spartan momentum with a pin in the third... San G 21-7.  Junior Armando Rodriguez, 145, further hushed the Cowboy crowd with a first period pin putting the Spartans ahead 27-7.  A Cowboy decision at 152 gave Cajon a glimmer of hope as the scoreboard showed 27-10 San G with 6 bouts left.

At this point in the match San G had won 5 bouts and Cajon 3, but Cajon AD Rich Imbriani correctly assessed the situation noting that the big difference in the night was San G wrestlers earning 6 point wins with pins vs the Cowboys only winning by decision.  Jacob Arrieta (126), David Rodriguez (132), and Ruben Arrieta (152) were the three Spartans losing by decison; however, all three were in danger of being pinned but fought through all three periods only relinquishing decisions.

The next bout at 160 pretty much defined the night for the Spartans as first year junior Jay Fernandez won 14-11 after being down early 7-2.  Fernandez never gave up finally taking the lead at 10-9 and basically out-willed his Cowboy opponent on a night destined for the Spartans.  That set the stage for senior, CIF-Finalist, Jerome Duarte to come in and close the deal at 170 as he pinned his Cowboy in the first period and guaranteed the victory with a 36-10 score and only four bouts left.  The Cowboys earned their first pin of the night at 182 and received two forfeit wins at 195 and 285 while the final Spartan points were won by senior Joe Whittaker, 220, who decisioned his Cowboy 12-5.

Final score on the board read San G 39 - Cajon 28, as the Spartans calmly shook the Cowboys' hands and confidently walked with pride to the bus in front of a stunned Cajon gym.  Congrats to Coach Son and the Spartan wrestlers on a great win; however, there is plenty of work ahead with 5 more SAL matches and a critical date with Carter at San G on January 4.
