Girls' Varsity Soccer Final Game of San G Winter Classic Tour vs Rim/Stats to Date

Game Date
Dec 28, 2011
Score
SPARTANS: 3
RIM OF THE WORLD SENIOR HIGH: 2

The final day of the San G Winter Classic ended with our Spartans going into battle against the Fighting Scots from Rim of the World.  Once again our Spartans jumped out quick and got on the board in the 7th minute of the game.  Lizbeth Mellado cleared a ball from the left side line that found Roxanna Gomez at their 40.  After settling the ball, Roxy beat her defender and had a break away to goal, which true to her style she buried in the corner.  Less than four minutes later, Roxy Gomez scored her 14th goal of the season on a perfect cross from the left footed Roxanne Villarreal that Roxy Gomez put home on a beautiful header at the top of the 6.  The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead quick, but Rim wouldn't go away quietly.  Our defense, made up of Brianna Irwin, Estefani Crisostomo, Chloe Amaro, and Dennise Flores held Rim scoreless for the first 20 mins.  However, at the halfway mark of the first half, Rim caught our defense out of position on a cross from the right side that they finished pulling them within one.  The first half ended with the Spartans leading the Scots 2-1.

Second half was a battle just like the first.  Our offense couldn't get inside the 18 to have any critical scoring chances.  Our defense stayed strong as Janellie Sanchez came in and stepped up in the middle and freshman Lucia Jimenez came in to play on the right for injured senior Estefani Crisostomo.  Our half back line, Marisol Barragan, Lizbeth Mellado, and Cynthia Rivera, all playing through injuries, helped out on defense and tried to get something going on offense to no avail.  With less than 15 remaining in the game, Rim was given a free kick in the middle of the field at our 25.  Our defenders lined up to the right of the goal, giving Rim a clear shot on Angele Villa.  Angele blocked the initial shot that was hard and low, but gave up a rebound that was finished by one of the Scots crashing the net, tying up the game 2-2.

The last day of the tournament is played like a CIF playoff game.  40 min halfs, and if tied at the end of regulation, two 10 minute golden goal sudden death overtimes, and if still tied, penalty kicks to decide the game.  After 80 minutes, the Spartans and the Scots were all tied up at 2 a piece.  In the overtimes, we outshot Rim 6-2, but couldn't pull out the win.  Kicks from the mark would decide the game.

We shot first, leading off with junior, captain, Jiselle Torres, who once again made her PK look easy and put us up 1-0.  Their first shooter slid the ball just past Angele tying it up 1-1.  Ruby Valadez shot next for us and missed when she bounced it off the post, giving them an opening.  Their second shooter took advantage of that and put them ahead 2-1.  Our third shooter was Roxy Gomez, who again found the net, tying it up 2-2.  Rim's third shooter, who was the one that took the free kick that led to their second goal, shot a bullet and put them up 3-2.  Roxanne Villarreal was our 4th shooter who calmly scored and tied it up again 3-3.  Rim's first three shooters had scored, but their 4th wouldn't be so lucky as she missed the net completely putting the Spartans back in it!  Sophomore #5 Brianna Irwin was our 5th shooter.  She waited for the whistle this time, but once again, she kicked it just outside the post, deja vu of her PK in the Etiwanda game.  This gave Rim a chance to win it, but Angele Villa would make a spectacular diving save on the ground to keep us in it.  Now in sudden death PKs, senior Janellie Sanchez buried her shot in the corner putting us up 4-3.  Their 6th shooter came to the mark and Angele Villa again made an amazing save to win the game!!!

Spartans finished the tournament in 13th place (out of 29 teams) with a tournament record of 3-1-1.

Roxanna Gomez finished the tournament with 6 goals and 1 assist in 5 games.
Angele Villa finished the tournament with 7 goals against, 50 saves, and 2 spectacular saves on PKs.
