Spectacular Year for Spartans in 2015-16... Spring Wrap-Up

The San Gorgonio Spartans wrapped up the 2015-16 school year on a positive note winning four San Andreas League team titles in the spring bringing the overall total of SAL titles to 9 for the year while also winning the San Andreas League Overall School title.  At the CIF level, the Spartans qualified for CIF playoffs in 17 out of 20 sports this year.  In the spring, the four SAL titles were won by boys' and girls' track and field, boys' tennis, and baseball.

Boys' track were tri-champs along with Indian Springs and Arroyo Valley keeping the boys' SAL team championship streak alive at 7 straight since the 2010 season.  Kaleb Hayes was the stand out sprinter for the boys winning 3 SAL individual titles (200m, 400m, and 4x100m) at league finals but the team was also bolstered by a strong distance team featuring Enrique Campos (800m and 1600m SAL Champ) and German Valdes (3200m champ) as well as jumpers Hunter Williams (long jump champ, 4x100m) and Chris Fulton (triple jump champ).

The girls' track team was outright SAL champions this year making it back-to-back titles for the Lady Spartans!  The girls were led by sophomore thrower Ana Tovi who swept both the SAL shot put and discus events and then went on to win the CIF Division 2 shot put title as well.  Other Spartans winning SAL titles for the girls were Nilia Thomas (800m), Alyssa Espinoza (high jump) and the 4x400m relay made up of Kiara Wade, Nilia Thomas, Alexis White and Crystal Murillo.

Boys' Tennis were SAL co-champs with Rim of the World when they avenged their first round loss by winning at home 11-7 in the second round.  They defeated Elsinore 11-7 in the first round of CIF but then fell to Oak Hills in the second round of playoffs.  Individually the Spartans were led by singles players Sam Cardiel and Phat Le who finished first and second respectively at SAL finals and the doubles team of Scott McDonald-Andrew Luis who won the SAL doubles title.

The Spartans' baseball team also pulled off back-to-back SAL titles by being co-champs with Rialto.  Having beat Rialto two out of three games this year, the Spartans were the SAL #1 seed going into playoffs and were ranked #5 overall in CIF Division IV in the final poll.  In the playoffs, the Spartans defeated Victor Valley 6-3 and Sultana 9-7 to advance to the CIF Quarterfinals where they lost a heart breaker 3-1 to CIF #4 seed St. Bonaventure in Ventura.  This season the Spartans were led offensively by Angel Ochoa and Jason Wright who were both selected to the SAL first team along with pitching ace Chris Hardin.  The other half of San G's one-two punch on the hill was Matt Negrete.

In bringing a close to the year, numerous Spartans were honored for their athletic accomplishments in 2015-16.  The SBCUSD SGHS Athletes of the Year were freshmen Phoebe Amaro and Dean Aceves, sophomores Ana Tovi and Chris Hardin, juniors Tatianna Russell and Kaleb Hayes, and seniors Crystal Murillo and Christian Nunez.  Nunez was also honored along with Cristen Pedroza as San G's Ken Hubbs school winners.  The Spartans had four students recognized at the Citrus Belt Area Athletic Directors' Association breakfast at CBU...
